When Meredith and Chris Hopkins were ready to welcome new baby Reed into their lives, settling into a family-friendly neighborhood was paramount. "I was really drawn to Collier Hills," says Meredith. "I love all the parks, Memorial Park and Tanyard Creek Park. The neighborhood is out of the hustle of central Buckhead and very convenient to Midtown and Virginia-Highland." Plus they just felt at home there: "We have many neighbors about our age."
For the décor of their 1920's house, "I was really looking for a tranquil and serene feel," says Meredith. "I like having a light palette and bringing out color in the pillows, accessories and art." In fact, the living room is her favorite space. "It's so light and airy," she says. In that room and throughout the house, serious antiques seamlessly blend with contemporary art. "The artist is my sister, Anna Marie Thompson, who also lives in Atlanta," says Meredith. "The combination of Anna Marie's contemporary paintings with the 18th-century French and Italian antiques creates a wonderful balance of old and new throughout the house."
SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY
"We entertain all the time," says Meredith. The Italian chandelier in the dining room is one of her favorite pieces, while heirloom china and silver allow for a modern interpretation of timeless Southern hospitality.
SHOPPING THE CITY
While Meredith loves the Paris flea markets, Atlanta has no shortage of opportunities to quell her antiques fix. She loves Riviera Antiques on Miami Circle and A. Tyner Antiques on Bennett Street. "I also frequent Scott's Antique Market a few times a year," she says. Sisal rug, Myers Carpet, (404) 352-8141.
PERSONAL STYLE
The Hopkins are emerging collectors of European antiques, and when they are shopping, they look to someone close to advise them: Meredith's mother, Petricia Thompson, who owns Petricia Thompson Antiques/Shabby Slips, which is located on New Orleans' famed Magazine Street. "Her store has a mixture of French, Italian and Swedish antiques, and contemporary art and accessories," says Meredith. "She has played a big part in my personal style. I have been on many buying trips with her, and I learn something new every time." Bedroom draperies, Silk Trading Co., (404) 355-8796.
